Blockchain's financial story is moving beyond cryptocurrency. Across Europe, regulators, central banks and financial institutions are examining how distributed ledger technology (DLT) can support the issuance, trading and settlement of securities. For finance companies, that creates two challenges at once: understanding a changing financial infrastructure and explaining it convincingly to clients and stakeholders.

From cryptocurrency to financial infrastructure (DLT)

A blockchain is a form of DLT that allows records and transactions to be shared and synchronised across a network. In capital markets, its potential extends to tokens representing financial instruments, including securities.

Traditional securities transactions can involve separate systems and intermediaries for trading, clearing, settlement, custody and record-keeping. DLT creates opportunities to redesign parts of that process.
